WHAT ARE SPIRITUAL GIFTS?
Spiritual Gifts are special divine abilities given to believers of all ages. Manifesting these gifts is a way of displaying God’s love and power to humanity. It’s important to note that these gifts are not acquired through formal education or training but are imparted supernaturally. However, mentorship can help develop and mature these gifts in an individual.
TYPES OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS
Based on the teachings of the Holy Bible, spiritual gifts can be broadly categorized into three groups: the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Gifts of Jesus, and the Gifts of God.
The Gifts of the Holy Spirit
In 1 Corinthians 12: 4 NKJV, we read, “There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit”.
These gifts are further detailed in 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 and can be grouped into three sections: Revelatory Gifts, Power Gifts, and Oratory Gifts.
The Revelatory Gifts function by revealing hidden things. These gifts include:
- The Word of Wisdom: which predicts the future and explains mysteries,
- The Word of Knowledge: which reveals past and present events and
- The Discerning of Spirits: which identifies spirits of all kinds.
The Power Gifts are characterized by their ability to perform specific actions. These gifts include:
- Gifts of Healing; involve the healing of various diseases and illnesses,
- The Gift of Faith; imparts supernatural faith, and
- The Working of Miracles; which involves the performance of supernatural acts.
The Oratory Gifts: involve verbal communication. These include:
- Prophecy:the ability to speak divinely inspired words.
- Diverse Tongues: the ability to speak in unknown languages supernaturally.
- Interpretation of tongues: the ability to understand and explain the meaning of tongues
The Gifts of Jesus
There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.”1 Corinthians 12: 5 NKJV Further elaborating on this, Ephesians 4: 7-8 NKJV states, Jesus Christ gave some gifts to men. “But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore He says: “When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.”
These gifts are listed in Ephesians 4:11 as apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers. These gifts are referred to theologically as Ministerial Offices, which are unique places of standing in leadership that God appoints believers to. This is evident from Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 1:1, where he identifies himself as an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God.
The Gifts of God
This verse refers to how the various gifts God has given to believers operate differently, yet all come from the same God. The diversity in the manifestation of these gifts is intentional, as it brings uniqueness and glory to God. For example, the Gift of Word of Knowledge, which provides information about the past and present, may manifest differently in believers through visions, sounds, feelings, smells, or even just a knowing. Despite these differences, the information ultimately leads to the same conclusion. Similarly, ministerial offices such as apostles, prophets, pastors, and evangelists may overlap and operate differently, but they are all important and serve to glorify God.
‘And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works [e]all in all.’ 1 Corinthians 12: 6 NKJV.

WHY DOES GOD GIVE GIFTS ?
God gives us gifts to demonstrate His love and power for the betterment of His children. As stated in 1 Corinthians 12:7, “‘But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” These gifts serve as a means for God to work through His people to impact others..
REQUIREMENT FOR RECEIVING GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT
The only requirement for receiving God’s gifts is to have faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross, which is a result of God’s love. Gifts are a display of grace, and no human effort can ever surpass the provision of God to receive them. It doesn’t matter how long you have been a believer or how much you serve God. Gifts are given by God according to His will, and no amount of effort or manipulation can change that.
CAN YOU LOSE YOUR GIFTS?
There has been a debate among believers about whether spiritual gifts can be lost. However, indeed, gifts cannot be lost, but the manifestation of those gifts can cease. The Book of Romans 11:29 AMPC, states, “For God’s gifts and His call are irrevocable. [He never withdraws them when once they are given, and He does not change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call.]” As I mentioned earlier, gifts are a means through which God manifests Himself through His people. It is like God has chosen a vessel, or a person, to manifest a certain level of His ability. He will not back down on His decision. However, when that person decides to turn away from God and sink deeper into iniquity, there is a definite diversion of the vessel to serve another purpose against God. God does not impose Himself on us, so gradually, the manifestation will cease. But the original appointment is still intact, waiting for the repentance of the vessel – person.
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, spiritual gifts are divine abilities given to believers by God to demonstrate His love and power to humanity. These gifts are not acquired through formal education or training but are imparted supernaturally. They can be broadly categorized into three groups: the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Gifts of Jesus, and the Gifts of God. While it is true that the manifestation of gifts can cease, gifts themselves cannot be lost. The only requirement for receiving God’s gifts is to have faith in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross. By walking in these gifts, believers can impact the world and bring glory to God.
This text gives a short overview of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit. In the upcoming lesson, I will explore how spiritual senses can assist in the expression of these gifts and will proceed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the gifts in subsequent lessons.
